I had an RF-4900 for a few years. It was a decent table-top for it's
time but it's performance can't compare to more recent receivers. Even a
good portable like the Sony-2010, Drake-SW8 or Grundig-800 can
outperform it. However the 4800/4900 is still considered a desirable
receiver for MW Dx'ing because of it's sensitivity and the lack of any
synthesizer noise. The digital display is only a frequency counter for
an analog tuner, not part of a synthesizer/PLL design. The audio quality
is nice. I wouldn't pay more than about $150 for the '4900' unless
you're a collector and you really want it. I recently bought an RF-2900,
the portable version of the '4900', for about $100. I wanted it mainly
because I used to have one many years ago and I was sorry I sold it.
It's not a great performer either, but it was a significant milestone in
the history of portable shortwave receivers.

I wasn't expecting to hear the word "milestone". I'm totally surprised by
the responses so far. Again... I was expecting scathing criticisms.

I was referring to the RF-'2900' (not 4900) as a milestone in the
history of *portable* shortwave receivers. The '4900' being a table-top,
was nothing special but it wasn't junk either. There are some mod's to
improve it.
