Hey - Look-Up in the Sky ! It's a Bird . . . It's a Plane . . . Not It's a Gibson Girl Kite ! ! ! ) for your viewing enjoyment - iane ~ RHF -------------------------------------------------------- When I was a kid, my dad and I built a box kit based on the US Army Air Corp rscue box kite. He had scrounged up several yards of the yuckiest yellow I have ever seen. It would fly with much lower wind speeds then the drug store "franklin" kite. And when we would fly it we always got a lot of attention. He tried several mil surplus mail order stores for the twin with wire used by real kite antennas, but had no luck. He wanted to see how well a 100' kite antenna would work with my crystal radio. Thanks, for now I have another item to add to my ever increasing project list. :-) Terry |

Of the many airmen who were shot down, I wonder if any were able to make contact using this kite supported antenna. I would imagine many of those came on the surplus market at the conclusion of the war. As a kid I found the local surplus store was a treasure trove of interesting things. A pilot chute with the spring mechanism removed and a decent fishing weight tied to the strings would sail a long ways in a good wind. And I disassembled more than one tank scope for those big solid glass prisms. |
