Do NOT use WD-40!!!. I'm not familiar with PUREtronics stuff, but I use
Chemtronics 'Tun-O-Wash' for my applications and it works great. The best
stuff you can use, if you can find it, is Cramolin R-5. And Glenn is right
too...the color TV tuner cleaner at Radio Shack works pretty good too.

Will WD-40 work?

Only if you want to destroy the control. Try, at the very least,

Tuner/Control Cleaner & Lubricant
sold at RS. Better yet, get a quality cleaner like PUREtronics Contact

Cleaner.
