There are a few other things to take into question. What frequency do you want to monitor? What is the elevation of the town? 78 miles is really pushing it, even with a beam antenna. I have a scantenna and it is a signal magnet!!! I have not had the time to put it up on the roof yet. I have it mounted on the fence and at best it is 6" high. I have copied VHF at 35 miles.
