Additional tips ...
I have the airband freq. and the home hospital med channel freq. in the scan all the time. You can usually hear the chopper a ways out if you have a decent antenna. Once you hear them enroute someplace, then you can chase them around the spectrum (or in your car ... did that once ... ended up seeing TWO med choppers at a car accident scene). Some times you'll get lucky and catch choppers from nearby areas who are delivering critical cases over long distances for special treatment. I even saw a USCG chopper once, which is fairly rare around here. I'm fortunate in that I only live 3 miles from a big local hosp. (not the level 1 trauma center though), and they often fly _ right over head_ when bringing in critical patients for emergent surgery. VvvvvvrrrrRRROOOOMMMMMMmmmmm .... ! I also catch many of the news choppers either on 123.05mhz or the local TV station frequencies (see your favorite database). Happy chopper hunting John Wilke RN WB9UAI Milwaukee |
