With a radio in this price range, having digital readout might be something of a disadvantage due to noise. However, it might make a better gift to a newbie than the $10 Bell & Howell if that's still around since it is easier to tune. $4 or $5 more will get you the cx-768. I don't know anything about these radios, except at that price, and an alligator clip hooking the whip to a long wire, you should get some SW stations, and for as cheap as you possibly can ...
