Default TIS on 1610 in Clark Co(winchester) Ky

What power do TIS run?
I am picking up a TIS on 1610 from Winchester Ky
at S3. That is about 30 miles due east of me.
The station is a low bitrate digital job.
The bit rate is so low that it is prety distorted.
And it sounds like they program it over a phone line.
Real high quality audio. Not!

I think the ID is "72W9Uk398"
"Winchester Clark County Emergency Management travelers
information radio station operating on 1610 AM. This
station was funded by the Chemical Stockpile Preparedness
Program...."

The Army has a WWII stock pile of nerve agents located about
30 miles south west of Winchester. They have been planning
to destroy these things form 30 years.

Anyone else get this statin=on, andare they runing a "lot" more
power then is typical?

Travellers' Information Stations operate in the AM Broadcast Band (530 kHz -
1700 kHz) and are limited to a 10 watt transmitter output power and the
antenna height may not exceed 15 meters (49.2 feet).

10W into a 15' antenna, most likely with a less then ideal
ground....I am impressed. I changed antennas, and added
to my ground system, this afternoon and was checking the
AM band. Given the garbage down there, I mean content
and technical qualtity, I haven't done any monitoring down
there in several months.

The TIS has a lot of "roll ins" for a variety of local events.
They mentinon a Sky Warn class to be held in March. I
suspect they don't update all that often and it means March
2005 not , March 2006.

Either they have increased their power, or my new antenna
and ground is a killer. I am going to have to check this out.

If I wasn't near 100F with 80% Iwould be tempted to go find
the Tx. I love to RDF fox hunt, but not in this heat.

And it was a little too hot to do antenna and ground work. But
a friend brought a ditch witch by, so it was too good a chance
to pass up. I put a perimter of 1/2" copper tubing around the
entire home. I new grounds where improtant, but if this made
this much difference...I am a little shocked.

I can recall receiving audio from a drive-in movie theater back in the
late '80's. The movie was Dragnet with Dan Akroyd. Called about a
dozen drive-in theaters within a 300 mile radius to see if they were
playing Dragnet. Never did find out where it was coming from.

But I bet if I had the TinyTenna Indoor Amplified Shortwave Antenna
back then, I could have put it into direction finding mode, and found
the exact location of that wireless system.

It isn't a one time event, they are still going strong today.
Too bad they use a digital recorder. The bit rate is just
too slow. When they switch over to the local NOAA
braodcast the audio gets better. Kind of sad.
