Haven't checked the url of the Royal Observatory of Belgium (world's
official sunspot activity recorder, accepted by scientists across the
world, including US) lately, but from what I have been getting on the
radio, the skip activity is up,,or maybe I just hit a few hot spots here
and there. Talked to 'ol Hangin Judge the other day on the first key,,it
was rapid fire after that,,.one contact then another than another,
everyone keying up for that Twisted swampy station around Tampa
Bay...mistake by the lake DEEtroit,,,,Garden,,Mag,,,Keystone..my my
my,,,well, I love that salty water!! Hey Brian (no, NOT the Skywave
Brian)........,,,we're slaying the Cobia...eat your yankee heart out!

I'm listening to a lot of skip also, Tuesday was notably crazy. I have a
barefoot rig in a piuckup truck so I can't really do much talking. Although
I don't mind the falmetrhowers that much I do wish they'd stay away from 19.
Some asses were rattling toasters on both 18 and 20 making the noise level
on 19 unbearable and barefoots were only getting about a mile on super flat
farmground.

Hopefully it keeps up. Keeps driving interesting.

Don't those flatlands sometimes act just like the water (with the
"mirror" skip effect) and propagate those signals? I know the desert
certainly retains those characteristics at times.

for about four minutes late Saturday afternoon. 26.285 USB was kicking
up some good dx activity early Sunday morning.

I just bought a log home out in the country in the middle of 3.5 acres of
flatland. I will start playing with sidebands then! Any base radio
reccommendations? Antenna's? I'm not gonna push mega power off the bat and
it has to be easy for the wife to use when I'm out on the grounds, etc. I
was kind of looking at the Cherokee CBS-1000, good/bad?

For strictly cb, that new FCC approved Galaxy rig is pretty strong.


Antenna's?


I like metal opposed to fiberglass. The higher the better. Of course,
for practicality you can go with a fiberglass stick like an Antron and
stick it way high in tree, if possible.

she don't have to mess with any of the dials or buttons. The CBS isn't
the heartiest of radios,,.not recommended for peaking (heat sink is too
small) but conversion is fine. I'd get a Washington or new Galaxy for
strictly cb and if you're not a hammie and want expanded capacity, I'd
look at an export. It's very cost effective.

Hey Chad! Let us know what radio you go with. Yea,,you can always add a
larger heat sink or a small fan,,,with some tinkering, the CBS can be a
screamer,...I agree,,the ease of conversion on this radio is simple,
plus it covers a full 400 AM "channels". There is knock-off of this
radio out there and it's called an "Eagle" (I believe) and it goes one
better than the CBS,,it has FM where the CBS has its weather band. Same
exact radio, different name on face plate.
Not sure about the Galaxy on the conversion, as I don't own one of
those newer models (although I did play around with one).
