A mental institution ID? A redneck playing 007? Doesn't make any sense to me. Jari Savolainen Interesting that this is the topic of your first post to RRS. It's a shortwave group ID. Others in this NG use them, but I think I can understand why you chose to harass me for having one. Shortwave group ID? My God, this is the most idiotic thing I've ever heard. Imagine the following: Phone rings, WA4009SWL answers: WA4009SWL. Caller: This is IQ0001SWL, WA4009SWL do you copy? WA4009SWL: Roger. Caller: Seems like Ma Bell is up and running today. WA4009SWL: Roger. Caller: 73's WA4009SWL. WA4009SWL: 73's IQ0001SWL. Phone rings again, WA4009SWL answers: WA4009SWL. Caller: This is the FCC. You've been sighted tuning shortwave frequencies with your Freeplay radio. Is this accurate? WA4009SWL: Roger. Caller: In that case, can you hold out your shortwave license against the kitchen window so that our reception inspectors can see it with their binoculars. WA4009SWL: Roger. Caller: Put your underwear on, for heaven's sake! WA4009SWL: Roger. Caller: Everything seems to be in order aside from your appearance. You can proceed with your tuning now. And keep your underwear on, fer chrissakes man! WA4009SWL: Roger. Caller: 73's. WA4009SWL: 73's. Phone rings for the third time, WA4009SWL answers: WA4009SWL. Caller: This is your mother, stupid. WA4009SWL: Rog...ehh, hi mom! Caller: The FCC just called. Put your underwear on, stupid. WA4009SWL: Yes mom! Caller: Good bye, stupid! WA4009SWL: 73's. What a hoot. Only in America. Jari Savolainen It's one of those *special* callsigns, y'know, like the special PhDs you can get just by filling out a form and mailing it in. Same deal -- you fill out a form, mail it in, and you get your call sign. So when you call someone on your shortwave receiver -- work with me on this -- you have some way of identifying yourself as a shortwave listener to the station you have called. -- Eric F. Richards, "As with Buchanan, you can ask Keyes what time it is, and the answer will include a withering indictment of moral depravity and possibly end with his head igniting. So when you call someone on your shortwave receiver -- work with me on this -- you have some way of identifying yourself as a shortwave listener to the station you have called. okay, here's the real story. And no, I do not have one of those SWL callsigns. Many SWL'ers like collecting QSL's from every station they can hear.. Many ham radio operators like collecting QSL's from every station they can hear. Ham radio used to be transmitted in AM mode on shortwave, for the most par, just like shortwave radio stations.. (Now, it's SSB for the most part) So avid dx'ers who heard ham radio operators wanted QSL's from them also, besides just broadcast stations. But most hams wouldn't send a QSL to a SWL, since the SWL's didn't have QSL' s of their own to give the ham radio operators. so SWL clubs issuing callsigns to shortwave listeners were born, so that the shortwave listeners would have their own individual QSL to send to ham radio operators in exchange for a QSL sent from the hams to the SWL's. (a fair trade). A lot of hams then would send their QSL' to SWL's since it was now a fair trade with the ham radio operator also getting a QSL back that verified the shortwave listeners heard him/her/them. |

One does not need a hokey fake callsign to send a QSL. How about the important stuff: location, signal strength and quality, antenna, receiver... y'know, similar to what you'd put in a reception report to a broadcast station. -- Eric F.
