I think I remember something in QST awhile back, but I'm sure it was more
than a couple years ago. IIRC, the author had a bad battery pack for his
laptop, so he rebuilt it by removing the bad section and providing a
connector to bridge the remaining batteries (for charging) and to power the
laptop externally with a 12VDC supply.

I heard a guy on a radio program just last week describing a small
notebook - about half to 3/4 the size of a normal one. Uses flash
drives instead of a hard drive. Said power consumption wasn't much more
than a well equipped cellphone. Sounds incredible, don't know if such a
thing is actually on the market yet. Just FYI.

MacBook Air, Asus EEE, Acer 100, and a whole bunch of no name clones.

If you are in the UK, Elonex ONE, which sells for 100 quid.

The thing you want is the Asus EEE PC:

Don't bother with the Windows version - it makes it almost as expensive as a
full-size laptop, and suffers from all the multitude of Windows problems.
The original version runs Xandros Linux, and there's a /huge/ range of
software available at no cost, including lots of electronic design and ham
radio programs.

I use one for a mobile packet station, for logging and for morse or teletype
modes.
