Default Zenith WaveMagnet.........

PU one of these for three dollars at a yard sale yesterday. It's model
#6-G-601-M, has a 'sailing ship' sewn into the cloth grill over the
speaker.

It's just AM but what the hey, I saw one on ebay. Any one in here ever own
one and can tell me about the performance, I've googled all night. One guy
said "it's could really pu those signals"..but that is just one persons
opinion.

It has a real cool looking 'Wave Magnet' in the back that is connected to
the radio, pretty wild looking IMO...lol....anyone have any idea as to the
year it was made or a link you can throw my way?

It'd be appreciated. :-)

Got some hams booming in on 3.880 here in Cinti. Oh. at 1310 UCT.

Does it look like this, except yours has a sailboat where this one has a
bomber?

There was a thread on this radio on rec.antiques.radio+phono titled Zenith
"Bomber".

Nice find. That particular radio, has some collector value,
though not huge, in good condition.

ca 1942.

Ask your question in rec.antiques.radio+phono and you get some answers.

Thanks Peter, 1942, that's something. I've read the suction cups are to
stick to a window. But isn't it like a loop, and you should have it 'by'
your radio. {?}

The rec.antiques.radio+phono Zenith "Bomber" thread may still be on your
news server, it's still on mine. It started 10-7 or thereabouts. There's
several people who are knowledgeable on battery powered tube portables
there.

Good antenna for MW. Same operation as a larger loop, but a slightly
lower output. Doesn't matter in your case, as the antenna is made to
match the radio's needs. I just picked up a 1947-48 RCA Victor console
a couple of days ago. It has a big turnable loop inside the cabinet
even bigger than a zenith wavemagnet. Should make for a good MW radio,
if I get it going. It lights up, but no sound. I gotta do some testing
on it, but it probably has flaky caps. I just hope my high voltage is
good off the tranny. If so, it should be easily fixable. It has a 78
phono which works, and covers MW and a portion of SW. Big knarly
speaker in it. Might end up being a good MW radio with good sound. Has
a pair of 6v6's for finals. I'll be able to use it for a good
geetar amp if anything. Just unhook the phono, and plug my geetar
up. Probably would want to use an instrument speaker to avoid damage
to the one in the radio though. "I crank up Zee volume, mucho a
plenty" I also have a 58 zenith TO with a wavemagnet, but it's not as
large or good as the earlier TO models. MK

Friend of mine had one of these when I was a kid. IIRC, the "wave
magnet"
(which was just a flat loop antenna, like was used in AM table radios
for years), was attached to the receiver by a length of insulated wire.
You could pick it up in your hand and slowly "wave" it left ot right to
find the strong point of the signal you wanted. Near a window was
always better - is for most antennas.

Tony

By the way, don't plug tubes in the radio while it's powered through the
line cord. When powered by the line, the filiment supply is derived from a
dropping resistor in series with the filiments and a hum smoothing
capacitor. If a tube is pulled while the radio is line powered, the
capacitor will charge up to the B+ voltage (usually 90V). The cap will have
enough charge to burn out at least one, and maybe even all of the filiments
if a tube gets plugged back in. The same thing can happen if you get
intermattant connections at the filiment pins. Most of the replacement
tubes are a few bucks each, but if it uses a 1L6, you'll be spending maybe
$30. Or a 1R5 may sub. I have a couple of battery sets. I've put zener
diodes across the filament supplies.
